[[author:Cory Doctorow|Cory Doctorow]] (1971-2056)

Maxes is left behind on Earth with most of humanity when a justified few, including his parents, are "ascended" to the alien ship in orbit where they can plead the case for humanity's accession to the Galactic Federation. To add to Maxes' annoyance, his dad is a founder of and prophet for a deeply supercilious new religion with more than a passing resemblance to corporate management. Maxes spends his time waiting for judgement by demolishing his absent parents' house, joining a chaotic commune, getting drunk, trying to get laid, torching buildings and generally being a complete arse.

It's difficult to sympathise with an immature twit who destroys his family house and then drops out in rebellion against his successful parents, but then most of us don't have prophets for parents who are chosen to speak on humanity's behalf to superior beings. It's a sort of a satirical sci-fi rapture, leaving most of humanity behind having tantrums. The story doesn't really start anywhere, or lead anywhere; the denouement seems chucked in just to bring the story to an end, but concentrating on the resentment of those left behind is a fascinating take on this sci-fi trope.
